Amtico was founded in 1964 in Coventry, England.
It began as a joint venture between two companies,
Courtaulds and American Biltrite, but by 1969
the company split and Courtaulds took possession
of the entire UK part of the business, with authorization
to use the Amtico brand name in every country
outside North America.
Over the ensuing decades, the UK aspect of the
organization expanded steadily, and in 1989,
the first Amtico Studio was opened in England,
providing a physical location for customers to
view products and create custom flooring designs
made specifically for their tastes and living
space. The concept was well received and more
studios were established across the globe and
companies locations created in Germany and Australia.
In 1993, the company acquired rights to use
the Amtico name in the U.S., resulting in the
formation of Amtico International, Inc. Since
that time the company has established locations
in France and Sweden, making it a truly global
supplier of custom flooring products and designs
with studios or offices in over 40 countries.
Amtico specializes in creative replicas of natural
materials such as marble and wood. Newer designs
resemble shells, metal or glass. Homeowners and
contractors can select from standard patterns
and styles or work with a consultant to create
a custom flooring design. Although the material
is laid in a manner similar to tiles or stonework,
Amtico states that its products resist wear better
and are easier to install and maintain.
